When I think about Pilates, I feel happy, so you could say that Pilates really is my 'happy place'. I love doing it, teaching it, talking about it and helping others find joy in mindful movement. It's not about doing tricks or poses, the magic is in the mindful, focussed practice of a method that allows you to find freedom of movement, confidence in your own abilities and an overall feeling of vitality.
I came to Pilates after a very long corporate career that saw my physical wellbeing deteriorate. I was encouraged by a group of friends to try Reformer Pilates at the local gym next to my work place. I did, and I hated it! I couldn't do any of the exercises, my back hurt and I felt embarrassed because I was the only overweight person in the gym. I gave up.
Luckily for me, the trainer at the gym didn't give up. She called me a couple of times and insisted I come back, promised that she would modify the exercises until I could do them. I started taking private lessons with her and eventually I could safely and confidently participate in the group Reformer classes. Before I knew it, I was hooked!
I was so hooked, I decided I wanted to teach, to give to other people the support and encouragement to find joy in exercise, to appreciate strength and mobility over aesthetics, and to feel confident and happy in the body they have.
My teaching and training journey has taken many turns. From fitness Pilates (the type you find in gyms), to clinical Pilates (think physical therapy) and now to my true love, the traditional Pilates method.
It is this traditional method, with its cohesive collection of exercises, based on an ordered sequence, utilising multiple pieces of specially designed equipment, that I offer at Regent Pilates. Of course to give clients a broad experience of Pilates, you'll find some contemporary and fitness exercises in some classes.
I hope to provide the same support and encouragement to my clients that I received when I first began. To provide a space for the focussed practice of a method that allows you to find freedom of movement, confidence in your own abilities and an overall feeling of vitality.
I'm excited to welcome you to the Regent Pilates' mindful movement family.
